How To Convince Clients It’s Time To Redesign Their Websites

One of the joys of being a freelancer is that, if you do your job, you’ll have clients who stay with you year after year. It really is nice to know that people appreciate your hard work and that you have built a trusting relationship.

After awhile, you might start to notice that some of those clients may be in desperate need of a site redesign. No, it’s not that the site you designed is that bad. But, after several years and several advancements in technology, a site may simply become outdated.

Personally, I feel like with each passing year I become better at what I do as both a designer and developer. A site I designed 5-10 years ago usually won’t measure up to the standards I have today.

Heck, there are times when I look at something I did one or two years ago and say "Wow, I wish I knew then what I know now. I may have added feature X or used script Y".

So, there are definitely selfish reasons for discussing a redesign. Both in terms of putting your best work out there and, of course, bringing in more revenue. That said, there are also times when outdated websites can have bad consequences for your clients.

Outdated websites leaves your client susceptible to:

  • Being bypassed by the competition.

  • Wasting precious time and money updating an old static HTML site or one with a clunky CMS from 2001.

  • SEO penalties from algorithm Google updates.

  • Possible security holes from outdated software or scripts.

  • Missing out on social media integration.

  • Failing to serve mobile visitors with a device-friendly version of their site.

  • Lack of browser compatibility.

What To Do About It

Perhaps the best way to approach your client on the subject of a redesign is to schedule some time to talk in person. You might even go that extra mile and buy them lunch.

When the subject of their website is brought up, tell them that you really believe they could benefit from a new website. List the benefits, including:

  • Save money and become more efficient with a new CMS such as WordPress.

  • The ability to create a custom template and functionality for mobile devices.

  • Take advantage of newer technologies to add new features.

  • Social media usage to increase the awareness of their brand.

Of course, the list can go on and on. The idea is to whet their appetite for what they are missing out on. From there, show them examples of some of your recent work. Point out specific features or layouts that you think may truly benefit your client. Explain how your other clients are using new technologies and how it has helped their business.

Keeping Their Budget In Mind

Your client may just be thrilled to hear about the latest and greatest you have to offer. Selling them on your skills is essential. But even more important to your client is how much the project will cost. Convincing them to spend money is always the bigger challenge.

One of the ways I like to present the idea of a redesign is to think of it as an investment in my client’s business. The investment isn’t just about a fancy-looking new site, it’s also about functionality and how it can potentially increase sales and make life easier.

Particularly for clients who spend a good bit of resources updating their site (whether they do it or pay you to do it), it’s a good idea to point out the cost savings of using WordPress, etc. This may not be as relevant to a client who just redesigned their site a couple of years ago. But, if we’re talking about clients who have gone 5+ years without a redesign, the cost savings argument can really convince them to go ahead with the project.

Most everyone you deal with will eventually ask you "How much does this cost?". It may be a good idea to have a rough draft proposal on hand. That way, you can give them a ballpark figure and still give yourself wiggle room depending on what the client wants to do.

In Conclusion

When you have a free moment, take a look at your portfolio. Study some of your older work and pick out a client or two who you feel could really benefit from a redesign. Go over their sites with a fine-toothed comb and figure out what it is they’re missing out on. Then, schedule some time to chat.

If you’ve built a trusting relationship, then they are more likely to really listen and consider your proposal. Be confident in what you say and don’t make promises you know you can’t keep. Just give them your best, most honest pitch. You just may end up with more work than you know what to do with (which could always be the subject of another post). Good luck!

Flyte Is A LightBulb That Levitates, And It’s Cool

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you see this? Let me help: How is this light bulb floating on top of that base? Secondly, what in blazes is keeping this lightbulb lit up?

Magic.

Well, the magic of magnetic levitation and wireless power transmission, to be precise. That LED lightbulb is held afloat by an electromagnet, and it is lit up wirelessly – look ma, no battery or power cables.

This, is the Kickstarter project, Flyte: Levitating Light. Flyte is a shatterproof, energy-efficent LED lightbulb that shines at 60 lumens, and is designed to fit into a cafe, home or office setting.

The bulb is supposedly good for 50,000 hours (or 22 years at 6 hours a day) – basically, you probably don’t have to change this lightbulb. The 7.9 x 7.9 x 1.4 in base is available in sustainably sourced walnut, oak and ash. There is also a limited-edition, handcrafted diamond-shaped wooden base.

Once the bulb lights up and levitates, it rotates slowly above the center of the base, much like an art installation you would see at an art gallery. To turn the light on or off, just touch the base lightly with your finger.

The best part about this is that the base for Flyte has a second use as a wireless charging base, though you will need third party accessories. To start charging, just place the phone on the base, that’s it.

How To Get Flyte

Flyte: Levitating Light reached their goal of ,000 within 2 days and at the time of this writing, has secured 0,000 worth of pledges. The lowest pledges are now at 9. The first batch will be delivered in October of 2015. You can also opt to pledge for the Flyte makers Kit which allows you to build your own levitating object.

Why It"s Not Too Late: 5 Successful Startup Founders Over 30

It is never too late. While the tech industry seems to be dominated by young entrepreneurs, there are plenty of middle-aged people who are making waves in the online marketplace. In fact, a study by The Kauffman Foundation found that the typical successful founder was 40 years old. Here are five successes who founded their tech startups after 30.

Jenna Bilotta

Co-Founder of Avocado

Avocado is an app for what some call the smallest social network. It has private chat, photo sharing, calendars and lists just between significant others. Jenna was one of the lead designers of Google Reader, so it’s a wonder that she and her partner didn’t stay with arguably the biggest tech company today.

Jenna thinks that it can be better for an idea to create its own path to success than to try to go through a company that while successful, may not care for the idea as much as the creator does.

Reid Hoffman

Co-Founder of LinkedIn and PayPal

Reid Hoffman was well into his thirties before he went on to co-found two of the biggest names in tech today. PayPal is a staple in the online marketplace, and LinkedIn is the best way to utilize social media for career placement.

Originally, Reid wanted to change the world through philosophy, but he soon realized that academia was too small for his desires, so instead he focused on the intellectual side of online business. In his first book, The Start-up of You, he says that in our culture of connection “All of the attributes of a business now apply to an individual.”

Adi Tatarko

Co-Founder of Houzz

Adi took a little bit of Pinterest, LinkedIn and Amazon and rolled them into one great online shop focusing on home design. Houzz offers a place to browse for browse design ideas, connect with contractors and interior designers, and shop luxurious furniture and other home products all in one place.

Adi came from barely being able to afford a plane ticket to a combined net worth of almost 0 million. Adi and her husband found a surprising need for housing help in the usually over-saturated online market while shopping for a home themselves. Through Houzz, they provide a forum for interior designers, architects and contractors who are looking for their place.

Jocelyn Leavitt

Co-Founder of Hopscotch

Because of Jocelyn Leavitt, kids are learning to code faster than ever before. Her app, Hopscotch, helps users learn the basic logic behind computer programming in a fun way that doesn’t require memorizing codes or even typing. Kids, and curious adults, simply use drag-and-drop commands.

She found success by getting work done reasonably and on time. Instead of waiting for others to break ground on that amazing idea, Leavitt thinks it’s best to just start working on projects and hopefully come up with something along the way.

Thea Runyan

Co-Founder of Kurbo Health

Healthy habits of children become the healthy habits of adults, and Kurbo Health is making healthy kids its mission. It uses a simple stoplight system to help kids make healthy food choices while providing additional one-on-one support from health coaches.

Thea believes in her app’s ability to make a difference. Her passion for healthy kids and her years of experience as a childhood weight-loss expert led her to create an app that gave fair access to kids in a market where children’s health programs were expensive and time consuming.

Start Your Legacy Today

Hopefully, reading some advice from these five successes will inspire someone on their own path toward starting a company after their twenties have passed. It may feel intimidating to compete with a younger, more tech-savvy generation, but with age comes wisdom and experience that gives those in their 30s and 40s an edge over the younger crowd.
